Art in the Park 2018: LOOK

Wellesley Women Artisans is pleased to announce the 6th annual Art in the Park community art event to be held in Simons Park (directly adjacent to the Wellesley Free Library) on Saturday May 19, 2018 from 1-4pm. This community event, organized in collaboration with Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend, is designed to promote creativity and is accessible to all ages, featuring different mediums and materials each year.

Our project this year is called LOOK – intentionally encouraging participants to look up, look around, and look to the future. Artists of all ages will observe, photograph, and draw the eyes of other participants. The drawings will be done on recycled yard signs from this year’s town elections, and then will be assembled into a larger yard sign of sorts, mirroring and looking back at the richness and diversity of our community. We hope that everyone is inspired to express themselves, have fun, and leave their imprint on this community-made art installation.

Art in the Park 2016

Thank you so much for joining us this year for Art in the Park.

It was our biggest event ever. So many people from our community came out to share the joys of making art together. The result was a big and beautiful installation of individual collages that now sways in the wind like a wind chime.
The installation will be up for a few more days until we move the collages to the adjacent Wellesley Free Library.

Art in the Park

Art in the Park
join us for the forth time to create and make art together as a community!

Art in the Park inspires people of all ages to make art including drawings, paintings, weavings and more. Wellesley Women Artisans started the free annual event with the idea of building community while tapping into Wellesley’s creative side. At last year’s “Neighbors Drawing Neighbors” event some participants said that they hadn’t taken time out to draw in decades! All materials are provided at the event and the community’s finished art piece remains on view for weeks. This year’s project will take place during Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend on Saturday, May 21 in Simons Park next to the Wellesley Free Library from 1 to 4pm. Using leftover industrial materials and donated paper scraps; participants will make a large-scale community collage. The goal is to simply make art together, and evoke emotion through color, shape and movement. The event is made possible with the generous support of Wellesley’s Natural Resources Commission, Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club and Wellesley Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Photos from Art in the Park

Our event "neighbors drawing neighbors" was a huge success. Many people came out and had fun taking photos and drawing each other.

This week we have been busy organizing all the wonderful portraits.
They are now hanging at the Media Room at the Wellesley Free Library. The exhibit is up for a
limited time only so make sure to go and  take a look. It's inspiring to see so many of them!

Last but not least, we have also created a flickr account where you can see your portrait created by someone else  and the work you created.

Art in the Park

Do you know what your neighbors look like? Do they know what you look like? Could you get to know your neighbors better if you drew their picture?

On Saturday, May 16, from 1-4pm at Simons Park (corner of Washington and Brook Streets) the Wellesley Women Artisans invite you to come and draw your neighbors. We’ll take your Polaroid picture, have you share three easy facts about yourself, and put them in an envelope. You’ll then receive a random envelope from someone you’ve never met and have the chance to sit down and draw the person’s picture. All ages and levels of art experience welcome. All materials will be provided. We’ll have a temporary gallery on site to share our pictures of each other.

“Even in a small town like Wellesley, so few of us really get to know or even meet one another,” says event co-chair Laura Fragasso. “By drawing each other we see each other in a new light, perhaps for the first time, and experience art making together in a way that few people other than young children get a chance to do.”

The idea for Neighbors Drawing Neighbors originated with artist Ivan Cash’s event at the Sundance Film Festival this year, Strangers Drawing Strangers. Learn more about Ivan’s event here: http://www.cashstudios.co/strangers-drawing-strangers/

Neighbors Drawing Neighbors is part of Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend and is the third public participatory art experience hosted by the Wellesley Women Artisans. The mission of the Wellesley Women Artisans is to establish and promote an arts community within the Town of Wellesley by creating a strong alliance among women artists residing within the town, facilitating community-wide art experiences for town residents, and building connections among artists, town government, businesses, and other organizations in Wellesley.
